I am interested in becoming an English teacher. I have taken some education classes and a lot of English classes. For my current English class I must write a research paper on education. I chose to write about parent teacher conferences. I personally believe they should be mandatory for parents to attend. But of course you cannot have a pro without a con. I figured active teachers would have more input than I would. If anyone has had experience with my topic, please respond. If have been on both ends of giving and receiving conferences that would be very helpful as well. Thank you.
Here are a few starter questions:
- If a student is making average grades, a few A's here and there or a couple C's even now and then, but you think the student has the potential to do better than C's, how would you approach the student and the parent(s)? Would require a conference or just make suggestions to the student?
- A student that regularly makes high grades is losing interest in the material and the grades are beginning to reflect the lack of effort he/she is putting into the work. You make a call to the parent(s) about your concerns, but the parent(s) are unable to meet due to work. How would you work around that obstacle to meet with the parent(s)? Home visit? Phone conferences? Or...?
- The same pervious scenario, the students grades are dropping below his/her average high grades. You request to meet with the parent, but the parent(s) refuse. You discover that the parent(s) of the student has literacy issues and does not comprehend the problems you want to discuss. How do you handle the situation? Would a home visit be easy to do? What precautions would you take to ensure you do come off as a threat or insulting to the parent?
