Posted over 2 years ago If you're a teacher, at some point you had to student teach. What made it great? What could have improved? If you've had the chance to be on the other end of things as a cooperating teacher, please share your suggestions for guiding student teachers through the process. |

Posted over 2 years ago If you are a school hosting a student teacher, involve them as if they are already a master teacher. It makes such a difference to include them and make them feel like they are already professionals.

Posted over 2 years ago I've had many student teachers over the years. What's remarkable is how different they all are- even if they are educated in the same teaching program. It made being a cooperating teacher interesting. My biggest piece of advice for student teachers is to get involved early. Even if you're not taking over the whole class, you can do little things to help feel more a part of the class instead of just observer.

Posted over 2 years ago I would encourage teachers to treat the student teacher as a peer rather than a subordinate - one of the teachers I student taught under had me do all the menial tasks rather than allow me to participate in the teaching aspects and I felt resentful and underappreciated. I wanted to learn while doing but felt as though she used me to do the tasks an aide could do such as walking the students through the halls and recess duty. IIpromised myself I would never treat a student teacher like that.

Posted about 1 year ago I've just been told I'm going to get a student teacher in the spring- I've never had one before. Does anyone have any gems of wisdom for me or books that I can reference to become more prepared?

Posted about 1 year ago Carrie said: Chances are you'll be better prepared for the situation than you think. Set-up a consult with the student teacher if you can before classes really start. Walk-through your room and the class schedule. Give an overview of what you'll be accomplishing while they'll be teaching with you. Set out clear expectations for what they should do the first week, second week, etc. If you don't know, ask their supervisor from their college the benchmarks you'll be assessing.

Posted about 1 year ago Are stipends for cooperating teachers standard? I had a student teacher last year and was told I would get a stipend of $30. I didn't think it was a big deal, but I actually never saw the money. Just wondering if other cooperating teachers have had this offer.

Posted about 1 year ago I appreciated student teaching with teachers that actually wanted me there, and wanted me to learn. I had to work with a few teachers that I could tell allowed me into his/her classroom because they were forced to by their principal. When I have student teachers in my classroom, I teach them as much as I can, and I show them that they are appreciated.
