Posted about 1 month ago Do you accept friend requests from students when you use social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace? Why or why not? |

Posted about 1 month ago Only if they've graduated, and they make the request, and are no longer in my school.

Posted about 1 month ago If they've requested and if I've been able to talk to their parents about it. I keep my page very private, so if the student also has a "friends only" policy, and doesn't allow access to "friends of friends" it should be okay. The only side of myself that I reveal on Facebook that I don't share in the classroom is my political views. But I believe in civil discourse, so I don't think exposure to that can be bad for a student, if they and their parents are pre-warned.

Posted about 1 month ago I have always strived to keep my relationships with my students on a "business" level. When I'm on Facebook, etc.. I am seeking friendly interactions with adults near my own age group and not a buch of teenagers. However, if I see any of them out in town I won't turn them away with a cold shoulder and ignore them. I have always very carefully differentiated between being a "friend" from being "friendly towards" all of my students and they seem to respect me for it. Only time will tell in the long run, though.

Posted about 1 month ago My current history professor has the 'not while you're my student' policy and I think when I become a teacher myself I will go along the same lines.

Posted about 1 month ago I only friend "former" students. It would be inappropriate to friend anyone in lower grades. If you wanted that kind of interaction, I'd suggest starting a classroom Ning to give them the experience and training in proper digital citizenship. Once you are talking about Facebook, you better all be out in the real world, graduated from high school and either in college or starting a career. I love seeing what wonderful young adults my students have become, but I rarely message or post on their walls. I will "like" something, but I prefer that any communication be something they initiate.

Posted about 1 month ago It looks like the friending current students is something educators on TheApple don't do- a wise choice to keep your professional life and personal life separate!

Posted 15 days ago Current students? Absotively posilutely no way.... And likely never since most of them would not want to anyway, but more likely it would not seem to me to be a sound approach vis-a-vis professionalism. This networking thing can be overdone, and teachers especially but also all who work with youth must be careful. My plan is to error towards the conservative and keep it to adults.

Posted about 3 hours ago I think I'll either (a) have teacher edition Facebook/Twitter for my student or (b) only friend them after they graduate. Now if I end up teaching college at some point, I wouldn't mind friending my students. I'm friends with some of my profs on Facebook, and it doesn't cause any problems.
