As you know  President Obama was honored with the Nobel Prize for promoting the world peace? Does he deserve such an honor? What has he done for being chosen as the winner of this prize?

What do you think about it?

He would not have been awarded the prize if he didn't EARN it. The prize is not always given fro what you've achieved. It recognizes people's attempts toward peace. President Obama has shifted the tone from "My way or the highway!" approach of GWB to one of diplomacy. He deserves it. Give him another one when the fruits of his initial labors are realized.

So, he deserves it not for what he has done but for what he is going to do in favor the world peace.

I guess he was awarded to encourage him (even more) to take  world into a new era.

Even these guys get it wrong on occasion... they've given one to Jimmy Carter, Gorbachev, Yassar Arafat and Al Gore as well.  Let's see if Mr. Obama can earn it.  All good if he does so.  But even he was stunned.

in my opinion it was too early for giving such prize to him, I mean, he hasn't done anything important for the world peace. As I said before now he really has to do something important. What a quest!

I was totally shocked when I read that Obama won the Nobel Prize-I'm sorry, but for what?  Don't we give the Nobel Prize to people who have truly done remarkable work...President Obama has not earned this.  I appeciate TomAnslem mentioning how the committee has gotten it wrong before-they definitely did this time.  A lot of people are believing what he says.  But if you really look at what he has done-it's not much.  He makes a lot of idealistic promises.  But the reality is we have a war still going on, extreme problems in Afghanastan, an economy that is not stable, a lunatic that may deploy a nuclear weapon, public school systems that are not going to be easily fixed... and what was Obama doing just the other day...he flew to Chicago in hopes that the Olympic Committe would choose his hometown.  I'm trying to think of anything he has done since he's taken office that has proven in the long run he really knows what he is doing.  Suddenly, the Nobel Prize just isn't as important to me as it once was.

 Dear broadwaylady1,

"Suddenly, the Nobel Prize just isn't as important to me as it once was. "

How true - what a descent from the high point in 1994, when this took place:

"At a ceremony in Oslo, Norway on December 10, 1994 Yasser Arafat, master terrorist, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize."

Regards,

John

We should have given one to Hitler.

Yasser Arafat was chosen among a trio of leaders working on peace in the middle east, in part, to keep the peace process going.

We should have given one to  Obama, H. Clinton and then ONE of the following: Limbaugh, Beck, Palin, Coulter, Bachman, Steele, Jindal, O'Reilly, Hannity, etc...

You can't give one to Hitler. He's dead. Just give it to ONE of those evil mother *uckers. Maybe they will start playing fair, stop biting and bullying the other chilren on the playground and begin to share their toys with others and think of someone other than themselves.

If you don't think that Obama deserves the award, who should have gotten the peace prize this year?

I'd have been fine with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  Was she a nominee?

She keeps the peace not only in the world, but in her own "household".  Her stature grows, however, by NOT getting this award.  Watch out if, in a year or so, she decides to push her current boss aside in a quest for the top job.

God help me, I might even consider voting for her.

In my opinion, if nobody deserves it  it shouldn't be given, otherwise it loses its value.

Good point, Fer.  I thought about who should receive it and I really couldn't think of anyone who truly has made such an impact.

It's interesting that no one can come up with a name of someone who should have won. A few years ago, the prize was awarded to a banker who certainly deserved to win it. Isn't anyone else in the world equally deserving? I hope so. Here's the info on the past winner I have in mind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Yunus

This should answer the questions and clarify the doubts!

Geir Lundestad, Secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, tells why President Barack Obama's creation of a new climate in international politics closely fulfils the statues of Alfred Nobel's will.

There is fighting going on in various parts of the world, people are starving in other parts...and all you can think of is a new Secretary of State who has done little to affect the world? There must be dozens of unknown heroes for peace who both deserve the award and who could make good use of the money.

Well, Mr. Hef, as a matter of fact, there is a priest in the city of St. Louis who devotes his life to the poor people of his neighborhood, while giving them the respect and dignity they deserve, providing food certificates, clothing, and spiritual opportunities for over 20 years, who is virtually unknown outside of this area, and would be a great candidate for the prize. Imagine what HE could do with 1.4 mil.

But these kind of guys fly under the radar, so he probably wasn't nominated either.

Take a look at Mother Theresa - she worked for her entire life doing exactly the same thing as the Saint Louis priest, yet she was virtually ignored by the Nobel committee until a few years before her death.  I mean no disrespect, Tom.
