Posted about 1 month ago I have been out of the classroom for 4 years now, (I was a literacy coach, now I'm a HS Intensive reading teacher) and I've always struggled with a major issue in the classroom.... I'm not good at grading papers!! It takes me way too long, and I really do give up my "life" spending every weekend grading papers! I've heard tips from other teachers that don't really work for me, like not grading every assignment, or having the kids check their own work. The main reason that last one doesn't work is because the assignments are subjective. For example, they have to answer 5 comprehension questions from a book they're reading. One of the most challenging for me to grade (and why I can't have just anyone grade them) is the inference questions. It's not a right or wrong answer, and not every student says the same thing! I also have trouble grading their sentences for the vocabulary words. I find myself spending about 5 minutes on one question, debating whether I should mark it right or wrong, and when it's wrong I feel like i HAVE to fix it in order for them to get it! I know this requires self discipline which I clearly don't have! This weekend is a perfect example. One assignment was a bellwork (short paragraph on a time they were frustrated and how they "snapped out of it") I said I wasn't going to read them, just check if it looked long enough and give them a check, not an actual grade. Well, I read one and of course it was wrong (the student didn't answer both parts of the question and didn't stay on topic) so then I graded all of them! They are 10th graders, so this is an important skill for them to learn. It's also hard me to multitask... if I spend so much time on grading, I don't have much time left for good planning! So I really hope someone out there has mastered the balance and can help me be a "good teacher" yet still have time for a life! :) |

| Posted about 1 month ago Every test should not be the same, if it is going to take you so long to check them. You should have pop quizzes, quizzes and tests. Sometimes even just a short response. And most definitely, as braincrapper said, get a rubric with points. As a small group instructor. you should have the flexibility to vary your exams- hope it helps |
