Help! I am starting in a new school, and it is a very small private school where I am the only 4th grade teacher. In addition, the school is undergoing a renovation both physically and in the structure and focus of the school. Consequently, all the things were taken off the walls and the previous 4th grade teacher, who is not there anymore, didn't leave much besides the textbooks and art supplies (and the school is also changing the texbooks for social studies, science, and math).  And I have only ever taught kindergarten and 2nd grade full-time. I am grateful for the job, especially in this economy and after spending last year with only the chance to substitute (my previous school cut a few positions and I had no seniority), but am brand-new to 4th grade.

Are there any 4th grade teachers out there, or anyone who's previously been in 4th grade, that could tell me what kind of things you have up on the walls? Language arts posters, calendars, birthday stuff, classroom helpers, rules, borders, what student work you put up, anything like that. I would really appreciate it. I have subbed for 4th grade, so I have an idea of the curriculum and I can do lesson plans and they have a template for the class schedule, but I don't know what things to put up in my classroom! Thanks.

You could put up six trait posters for writing and then add student work to the bullten board as they complete writing assignments.  I have an alphabet that is written in cursive above my board.  I also use incentive charts and have hand-made posters about the rewards they can earn by reaching certain levels. (an example for reading would be: Once you've read 50 books you earn _________. and add the names of those who have earned their rewards.

Hope this helps.

I am starting in 4th grade as a first year teacher and I am in the same boat.  I am only teaching English Language Arts, so that narrows it down a little.  I am doing a rainforest theme.  I found lots of animal print border and am going to put up mostly writing posters.  I have one that lists words that are frequently used in writing and then gives synonyms.  (I student taught in 4th and they had trouble thinking of more descriptive words) I also have one that is test taking tips and a few more with writing things on them.  I am going to trim them with the animal border.  Also, from what I can tell, most 4th grade rooms have the cursive alphabet up about the board or wherever, but I have seen it in every 4th room that I have visited.  I've also seen graphic organizers, such as memory maps, posted so that they can use them when writing or guided reading.  I am writing the class rules with the class on the first day.  They will all sign the "contract" when the rules are written and I will hang that up so that they know what their expectations are.  The room I student taught in also had a word wall with the spelling words from the previous week added after the test and also a math/science word wall on the other side so that way when they are doing science, they can easily locate the words to spell them.  Hope this helps!
