I saw last year that children really do learn best when they are truly interested in a subject. Last year in my kindergarten class we were talking about careers, and one little boy said that he wanted to be a paleontologist. I was impressed that he accurately pronounced that word and asked him if he knew what they did. He said, "Yes! They get to study dinosaurs and fossils and excavate and they get to work for the Natural History Museum!" 

"Wow, he knows all that," I was thinking. Then I said, "Your dad is an orthodontist. Do you know what he does?"

He looked at me blankly, and then very thoughfully said, "I just don't know." 

I was so glad it was nearly time for dismissal so that I could laugh in peace. :)
