debo, I was reading your post and I recently read a book by John Quinones printed last year. He told about some of the problems there and what is being done there. Maybe you could contact him and this would give you another angle in trying to help. teacher__411 Every cloud has a silver lining. |

| Posted 4 months ago Thanx 411, What was the title of the book? Maybe I should read it first. The more I've talked with FER, the more I realize how UNequipped I am to write about this topic....I haven't a clue of what it is like to live in a semi-lawless nation (what good are laws if they cannot be enforced?)....which is so, ummmm, insensitive to it's female population....what would it be like to be a woman in a society that sees you as a sub-servile slave, there only to make babies, clean, cook, and shut-up or get slapped/beaten senseless? Uh-huh I know this was once the status of women the world round....but, I've never had to live like that...so I really cannot relate. With my attitudes, and my big mouth, I'd be dead already if I lived in Mexico! My mother once told me a story about a woman whose husband would get drunk, come home and beat her. She was in and out of the hospital from his beatings. Finally, after years of taking this, the woman took advantage of her position. When her husband came home drunk one night, and he passed out on the bed, she tied him up and took a baseball bat to him. Of course, he was put in the hospital, and survived. The weird part of the story is that he returned home after this incident, and he never hit her again. (What's weird to me is that she took him back, or that he actually wanted to go back...LOVE ~ go figure!) Amazing. I don't think I can really "get it" that she would let him back in the door, or that he would want to come back home, or that he would actually change and be a better man afterwards.... I mean, really?

| Posted 4 months ago HOLA! DEBO: There is a very popular T.V. serie in Mexico, its name is "MUJERES ASESINAS" , the program is very interesting, it shows how much woman can tolerate before she becomes a killer. All the cases are real, they were taken form women that are in jail after killing their husband, boyfriends , bosses, etc (Can you see? they kill to survive and then they are jailed). As a matter of fact, I prefer the Argentinian serie. It's the original, the best. The one that is prodeced in Mexico is just a bad copy from the excellent production of Argentina. (Mexico produces many good programs that are sold to the rest of Latin America and the channels in spanish in USA.) but this serie is not Mexican. (cases from other country in Latin America, violence around the world.) |

| Posted 4 months ago Hi FER! (Buenos Dias, Senor!) Okay. I have this great grin (ear-to-ear smile) on my face because my Mom watches these soap operas in Spanish...and she is totally hooked! She and her girlfriends are "glued" to the tv, all eyes, and "ohs, ahs, arrghs", and they compare notes ~ seriously discuss what happened to the characters....I think they LOVE all the emotional 'richness'! Of course, I cannot understand them...but, FER (don't get your feelings hurt) they make me laugh! Now, this may be the tell-tale sign that, even though my Mom is Spanish, I was not raised in the culture and really cannot relate to a lot of things about it : but, these "series" make me laugh because they are so melodramatic....emotionally waaay over the top... and I'm not used to seeing people over-acting and over re-acting to such an extreme. It is difficult for me to take them seriously. Please do not feel offended, because I find this true with soaps in English, too. When I was a little girl my Grandma used to watch "General Hospital" and "All My Children"...of course I had to watch them with her...and I was very young, so I didn't know how surreal they were...but, even then, I could not see them being "real life". People do not actually behave in this manner....at least not in my experience. And, say they did act like that....these would not be people I would hang-out with...just too much drama....at least for me. I do see your point about women being driven to the edge then going wild and taking revenge... there was this documentary I watched about women in prison, it was called "Jail Birds". When I heard their stories, I thought it was not "just" nor "fair" how the system failed to protect them, then put them in prison for protecting themselves. So, I do see your point. Is your day beautiful? It's gorgeous here! ~debo |

| Posted 4 months ago Debo, The title of the book is Heros Among Us: Ordinary people, Extraordinary Choices I must say that Lorena Bobbit was a trend setter in a way. Men are now a little more leery of their women and knifes. Thank you Fer for the holiday wish from over the border. I hope you find your lid soon. You are a sweet person. | Posted 4 months ago Fer, I almost translate your message, but I am unsure about a couple words. I have translated thank you and _ _ the united states of north america. I am not sure about the meaning of que vivan. Sorry, I like learning new words. I could google or get out my dictionary, but I learn better when I communicate. My daughter would be calling the looney bin if I started communicating with my dictionary. Every cloud has a silver lining. |

| Posted 4 months ago AMIGA DEBO: It's on September 16th. and it's the biggest celebration in Mexico. Now, It's called "mexican night" We got our independence from Spain, in 1810. I don't why May 5th is more celebrated in USA than It's here. On may 5th, we celebrate the victory against France, when they invaded Mexico in 1862. |
