Have you overheard a coworker at school say something to a student, parent, administrator or another teacher that made you cringe? What was it and how instead should it have been approached?

I teach high school science, and every two rooms are connected by a common prep area.  The teacher in the room next to me was trying to get a hard concept across to her students, when I suddenly heard her say, "You guys can't get this?!?  You all are getting dumber by the minute."  She was only a second-year teacher at the time, and I had a good long talk with her about what not to say to students after that!

 Overheard in a teachers' lounge:

"I can't wait until I get a real job" (translation: one that pays a lot more money.)

and

"It's us versus them" (i.e. teachers versus students.)

I've heard this before but usually it is teachers vs. admin.

 Dear Samantha.

"I've heard this before but usually it is teachers vs. admin."

Well, based on my experience, I have to admit I'm far more sympathetic to that sentiment.

How abouth these, do these count? I've heard them said by teahcers while I was a student:

"you're all worthless!!"- as said by a P.E. teacher to a buch of kids who didn't want to lay kick ball. Went on to teach another 8 years after that.

"Goddamn clumsy kid!! How the hell do you get A's in this class!?"- Told to a kid who accidentlydropped a book whilestill holding on to its wrapping paper, ripping it.

"Worst group in the whole school"- Told by a music teacher to a bunch of slightly rowdy, but still a bunc of good kids.

"The laziest roup I have ever had the shame to teach."- Told by a physics teacher to a university class who didn't always have their homework on tme. I happen to know for a fact that most of those kids had nearly full time jobs. Some even had families.

"Quit this faculty. You DON'T have what it takes to be a teacher!"- told by my Growth and Development professor...to me. Ironically, she was less than exemplary as a teacher.

North is nice, but East is least.West is best! Man, that ain't got nothin to do with anythin.

 Dear mradames,

"Went on to teach another 8 years after that."

I doubt it - whatever he was doing, it wasn't teaching. And the same can be said of those other bozos you mentioned.

One beautiful, I was having a nice class, you know, everybody was working, they all understood the grammar point, no dubts, everything was perfect. I sat to enjoy the monent, then I turn to see through the window t the beauty of the flowers that were in the garden, the aroma was incredible. I decided to get closer to  the window to have a better moment, I was about to touch the window when the gardener,"Don Panchito",fell in the garden from the roof!!!

At the end of the day "Don Panchito" was okay but what I said when he fell in front of my eyes, was remenbered by my students the whole year!!!

And I'll bet it wasn't " Mamma Mia" or "Holy Mackerel", either.

"it's not my job to care about you"

"you're not gonna amount to anything, anyway" (said to a student who was upset about not doing well on an assignment)

I've heard others, but those two made me kinda upset

When my daughter was in 3rd grade I had heard stories about one of the 4th grade teachers at our school that made me cringe. This woman would say things like, "How are you ever going to 5th gr when you can't even multiply?" She also used to throw papers, etc out of the 2nd story window and throw erasers at the kids. After an Anger Management class she came back to her room only to do more of the same. It took the threat of a law suit by a few parents to get rid of her.

I had a teacher say to me, "What are you doing in this transition meeting?  You should not be here you are only an aide.  This is confidential."  The teacher I was working with did not say anything, just kind of shrugged their shoulders toward me-like whatever, sorry.

What should have been said, "We are transitioning for the next grade, did you and the lead teacher discuss where your students would like to go?  If so, then you could get some planning done."

I was in a band rehearsal and stopped to question a note. The note happend to be an 'F' that was in measure 13. What I said was, "I'm questioning an F in measure 13."  (Say it and you'll get it.)

A student raised a hand to ask, "What is wrong with measure 13?"

I might say, " HOW ARE YOU EVER...IF YOU (this is where I'd change it a little) DON'T MAKE THE EFFORT TO...

I almost feel as if (some) teachers get so frustrated with apathy/poor attitudes that they use ANY strategy they can to get something going. This teacher, in a weird way, cares.

What you should never say is " Just a minute, I'm checking my e-mail. or "Just a minute...(etc...)

Students with reduced or free lunch get to go to the cafeteria for break. Co-worker says..."I need all the free lunch kids to go to the cafeteria." Maybe should have said..." All students with permission can now go to the cafeteria."

As a new teacher, i receently  informed my fifth grade student of how dissappointed i was in them for the behavior they'd displayed that  particular day.The student went home and told her parents what I'd said, To my dismay i was read up and down by the parent and told to watch what i said to the students, particularly being dissapointed in them, mom said this would have an effect on student self esteem, I was stunded. Did i do anythng wrong and was this something i should not have said. I need clarity, before the next school year starts.  Thanks, BT.
