I am a full-time graduate student M.A. in Ed. & H.D. My program field is transition special education teacher certification. I love teaching and I am excited and crazy about the field of education however I recognize that I don’t want to teach forever. But I am unsure about what other options I can explore with this degree. This is my first year teaching and surprisingly it has gone well. However I am starting to think that teaching isn’t for me and it has a lot to do with my program.

Is this a question?

Yes this is a question. My question is what can I do with a Master's in Education and Human Development besides teach?

Deven could answer this better, if he comes here anymore, but I'm thinking social work?

Yes, San...Deven might know this...or, maybe Joel....and John knows where to look-up anything... here's my thought:  Personnell/Human Resources...I often thought I wouldn't mind working with people in that position, helping them...

SpeEd,   what don't you like about the job you're in?   Is it the kids? Administrators? Parents?   Or maybe you are aching for a position in which there is more financial recompense?

Let me know... the teachers here are very helpful...keep checking back, someone who actually knows how to help will drop-in....

Ok first and foremost I do like my job. But it is a huge stressor. I receive no support from my school or my assistant teacher. When I speak with my supervisor about some of my reservations I am brushed off or hit with a "thats the way things are here". I am anxious for the school year to be over. I do enjoy teaching students however, I think I would prefer small group instruction rather than teaching multiple classes. I also work in a dangerous envrionment. I have been assualted multiple times and each time I have been told seeking action against the student could be dangerous for the school. Some may say well then why do you stay. I am at my current placement through my Master's program and I dont plan to be there next year. I know that with a Master's and certification I am marketable. As a teacher I understand and recognize that I wont make millions and I am Ok with that. My current salary is decent for a starting teacher with a  BA+15 and for someone my age.

I am looking for possible career suggestions that allow me to stay in the field of education but explor other options that teaching multiple subjects and classes.

Anyone who tells you that reporting a kid who assaults you could be bad for the school has no business in this business.  I don't know your situation other than what you describe, but sounds to me that this is nearly untenable.  A supervisor should have your back, the administration should be interested in honestly protecting its staff, and teachers should NOT be assaulted.  I hope this is more the exception than the rule out there.

You seem to have a marketable degree... have you considered private schools, parochial schools?  If income is not a determiner, the conditions are almost always better, kids nicer, staff and admin. more supportive.  Not always, but almost always.  Anything you do corporate-wise would be entry level, even with a masters.     Good luck in your decision.  If you stay in education, get the heck out of that school/district.

Yes, I do agree. I will admit that I was scared to file charges because of the response that I would get. Yes I don’t work at a typical school. I work at a Non-public school, level 5 (Level 5 being one step away from a residential facility) for students with LD and ED but our population is mainly ED. The students at my school were sent to us by their counties or school districts that were unable to service them and meet their needs.

I am definitely going to check into other school districts and expand my realm. I have come to realize that I am only as limited as I allow myself to be in the field. Education is constantly changing and although the change maybe be slow there is a spot out there for me.

Good response!   We are all only as limited as we allow ourselves to be...a slippery lesson....smile.

I taught Gifted Ed and it was wonderful....kids that actually WANTED to be there, small groups, fun projects... there were still "issues" with the administration...and budgeting was never good...but the enthusiasm for learning made it a superb position!

Just an idea....
