What do you do about profanity in the classroom.

I d*mn well won't stand for it (unless, of course, I'm the one doing it.)

But seriously, when I was teaching at a parochial school, the school regulations had consequences for cursing ( usually detention), so that pretty much took care of the problem.

Interesting question.

During my 28 years as a classroom teacher, I don't recall any student who presented a problem with profanity. Occassionally, a word would pop out and a stern look from me or comments from the students would be enough. I never came across this as a problem...and did teach in NYC schools with very regular kids.

I like to discuss the subject openly with the students in High School and Middle School.  I start out with a challenge for their opinions, like: "What do you think it says about a person's intelligence if they curse a lot?"

The point is that any schmuck off the street can use curse words, and most do.  But a person who cares about how others perceive their mindpower develops sufficient vocabulary that they don't HAVE to curse.  This is probably colored by the fact that I specialize in language (Spanish and English, ESL, Bilingual/Bicultural Ed.)

I myself found early on in junior high that a strong mind develops a strong vocabulary, and knows how to use it.  I give students an example:  "Here are some synonyms for a  commonly used term.  You will all recognize what that term is, but you don't have to say it.  Just think how many other words there are:  nonsense -- balderdash -- poppycock -- fol-de-rol -- tish-tosh --fiddle-faddle -- etc."  They all get the point, and I have repeatedly seen students take it seriously and curse less as a result.

Scripture says that every man will one day give an account for every idle word spoken.
