Posted 11 months ago Do you know what RSS means? Do you know the difference between Facebook and Myspace? Is Tweeting a dirty word? Do you how to use Wordpress? These are all part of the field many call Social Media? How Social Media literate are you? |

| Posted 11 months ago I have no idea what RSS stands for, but I use it to subscribe to feeds from several different websites. Tweeting will get you 10-15 without parole in some places, but on the Internet it means posting to Twitter (are Twitter posters called twits?). Myspace is for overly hormonal young people, while Facebook is a social network primarily for older children like me. Wordpress is a blog host and blogging tool. So what is RSS, anyway? | Posted 11 months ago RSS= Real Simple Syndication Yes, and I use Facebook Tweeting is not a dirty word, I tweet several times every day. Yes, I know how to use Word Press and do so at least once a day. I think I am fairly social media literate but with the new additions every day I never feel caught up with it all. I love it! |

| Posted 11 months ago Tweet tweet! Let me start a controversy! I am seeing a lot of HYPE about technology in education. It has gotten to the point where if kids are doing it we should be teaching it! What's wrong with that is before we can teach it we have to know what we are doing and well enough to keep the kids from "hurting" themselves doing it. Most of us are not there yet. If you don't know what all the social media stuf is about, how will you prevent cyber bullying and other abusess? |

| Posted 11 months ago I don't teach technology to the kids; they teach it to me. "What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches." - Karl Menninger |

| Posted 11 months ago Most teachers know very little about integrating technology into the classroom. That's sad. To me, that means that most educators should learn more about it. Why? It will help them be better teachers. The more you know about technology the better a teacher you will be. Those who fear technology won't believe it. Those who embrace technology already know it. Abuses like bullying are a totally side issue. MisterD says ...

| Posted 11 months ago Why is it silly to learn from my students if they know more about a topic than I do? I teach them what I know about media ecology, vetting sources, etc. and they teach me about devices they have that I don't and are not available to me. I tell them about websites I've discovered and they tell me about websites they've discovered. But the fact is, Joel, that while I think I am fairly technically literate and not at all afraid of using technology in the classroom or out, developments in technology move faster than I or my school's resources can keep up. While I know alot about using white boards in lessons, for example, I've never gotten my hands on one to use. I take your comment to mean that teaching should be a one way transfer of information from the adult to the children. I am pretty sure you don't actuallty believe that is what should happen in a classroom. If I am mistinterpreting your comment I apologize; but if that is how you really feel, I call that silly. | Posted 11 months ago Oh boy - do I ever agree with Deven on this one, Joel. I think it's silly to say it's silly to learn from one's students - or from ANYONE! I'll take instruction in something I don't know wherever I can find it. Here in the penitentiary, I've learned one heck of a lot about computers from - yup, my inmate students here. Would you like me to hack into your bank account and tranfer all the funds therein to an numbered account in the Cayman Islands? Seriously, though - I have learned a great deal from my students, many of whom have a much greater mastery of computers than I did when I arrived here.

| Posted 11 months ago Hi Deven, You are correct. My comments were inappropriate and I'm sorry. I was generalizing my frustration with teachers who literally don't know how to turn on a computer (and they still exist). When I hear the line about students teaching teachers I think of the teachers who ask students things like "how do I open this application?" I've heard the line so many times in the past decade that I see red whenever it pops up. Sorry, again. Joel Deven says ...

| Posted 11 months ago No problem, Joel. I agree with you about the teachers who still don't know how to turn on the computers. Fortunately I don't work with any. However, some are flummoxed (I LOVE that word) at the slightest technical glitch and often turn to me for assistance. I tell them to ask their students to check it out and try to fix it and if they cant, call me back. I've only received one callback since last February when all classrooms finally got computers. Oddly enough, the one callback I got had a very simple solution...plugging the darn thing in. "What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches." - Karl Menninger |
