Do you remember any of those famous sayings you know you could count on hearing when you went to church? For example, women would begin their testimony during the week of revival with "I'd like to thank the Lord for my space in the building." Then they would proceed with, "Giving honor to God, my pastor, first lady, deacons, members and friends..." Then you knew you were in the right place and revival was about to start ... right after prayer, praise, and testimony service.

Which sayings do you remember the pastor or someone else always saying in church?

By the way, where did all that go?

My pastor has always done the same benidiction "And now may the Lord bless you and keep you, may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you now and forever more.  Amen!"

Always a nice closing!

I think the church sayings still happen, they have just changed.  After going to a Christian college and now teaching at a Christian school I pick up on all sorts of Christian buzzwords and phrases.  They can drive me crazy becuase they can sound so artificial.

The same benediction...."And now may the Lord bless you and keep you, may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you now and forever more.  Amen!"... but it also has a personal meaning too. When my sister was young... like 6 yrs to 10 yrs she would mimick the pastor when he said this. Our pastor would raise his hands above the congregation and my sister would raise her hands too.

The one that our church has always done is the "peace be with you" and this was special because we would say hi to everyone around us, and usually hug as well.

I had actually considered writing a book on "Christian-ese", meaning all those terms we use and understand in the church.  They sound like propaganda, or gobbledy-gook, or some alien tongue to those outside the church.  But I found out that there were books written on the subject!  Here's an example:  "Well, brother, I've been going through a real time of tribulation and testing..."  Or this one: "Well, we'll put you on our prayer list for our quiet time..."    Or "Join us for  a time of fellowship..."

Think about it -- we use these all the time, and expect new Christians to know what we mean!
