New York City has spent a small fortune training me to be a better and better US history teacher, but has never put me in a position to teach American history. "What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches." - Karl Menninger |

| Posted about 1 year ago Joel's answer reminds me of one of the most important things I try to teach my students about history, and that is that it didn't all happen in the past, that history is being made daily and we are the ones making it. | Posted about 1 year ago The reason I said "Today" was because in order to be effective, you have to relate what you are talking about to something that the students can relate to. The (American) Civil War, for example, is much more interesting when it is compared to the fighting between groups in Iraq. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I agree it is easier to related US history today then things in the past. Though the fun of history is to do it for all periods |

| Posted about 1 year ago The great thing about history is that it includes EVERYTHING and is always changing. What happens now, is tomorrow's history. |

| Posted 6 months ago I am an aspiring Social Studies Teacher. The goal is to teach in the profession for three years. I am open to anything and all suggestions. I am a down to earth person. I love to have friends over and talk about life. I love to cook and have friends over. I enjoy planning weddings and parties. My most favorite thing is to go to the SPA...it is a deal breaker for me |

| Posted 6 months ago Ok Joel Heffner, I only want to teach Social Studies for three years. I would like to also teach Biology for three years. Then become Nationally Certified, and move on up the ladder in teaching. I would like to make the teaching profession a career but the subject themselves three years tops. I was thinking of going into Administration. However, if I enjoy teaching and I am sure I will...History, Economics, Civic, and American Government...here I come. However, If I am Blessed with a job and can meet all of my demands in teaching...then I could stay in Social studies or Biology for Five or Six. I want to move forward in the field in certifications. It takes five years to Master any task....But the teaching profession is where i will be until I retire. I am a down to earth person. I love to have friends over and talk about life. I love to cook and have friends over. I enjoy planning weddings and parties. My most favorite thing is to go to the SPA...it is a deal breaker for me |

| Posted 5 months ago Greetings all!
I am a World History, Ancient History and U.S. History teacher, been at it for 12 years, and in that time have tought from grade 6 through grade 12, in private, parochial, public and alternative schools. I currently teach Alt-Ed in an urban school for disengaged and disruptive students from ages 13 to 17. I would love to bounce ideas off of teachers who have created engaging games and other " attention grabbing" activities. My students have zero interest in any academic work, and I find myself trying to re-invent the wheel daily.
Regards!

| Posted 5 months ago Have you tried encouraging your students to create their own class newsletter and/or Web site. One activity that usually works well is to take a poll and report the results. You can poll the class, classes, teachers, or anyone else you can get to. history67 says ...
