| Description: | These are colored rods that physically demonstrate the concept that numbers equate to quantity/ amount/ mass. Numbers are symbols we manipulate to communicate quantity ~ for some children this idea is abstract and not easy to comprehend. Cuisenaire Rods give the student a visual impression of "number" that they can touch, compare, and see the relationship between quantities. Students who are having difficulty with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division will benefit from a bit of work with the rods. Advanced students will enjoy working the mathematical formulas and puzzles. The students think 'the rods' are fun ~ while they learn! |

I love the rods, but I see one drawback to using them: the teacher needs to do her homework. The rods are fun, they look like building blocks, when, in fact, they are a mathematical learning tool. As with any tool, there are specific methods of use. Unfortunately, many teachers buy the rods, fail to do the learning necessary for using them as a tool, and the rods end up being play things, toys ~ and nothing more. I learned to use the rods from Manon Charbonneau, who taught at my college. (She's written insightful information for using the rods, add her to your search engine + Cuisenaire Rods.)
Teachers who take the time to learn to teach with the rods have amazing results!- Flag as inappropriate
