School Sells Test Points for $20 to Raise Money
Associated Press
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that a parent advisory council at Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro come up with the fundraising plan after last year’s chocolate sale flopped.
The school will sell 20 test points to students for $20.
Students can add 10 extra points to each of two tests of their choice. The extra points could take a student from a “B” to an “A” on those tests or from a failing grade to a passing grade.
Principal Susie Shepherd says it’s not enough of an impact to change a student’s overall grades.
Officials at the state Department of Public Instruction say exchanging grades for money teaches children the wrong lessons.

I would suggest that the Associated Press author made a grammatical error, and that the article should read, ". . . came up with the fundraising plan after last year’s chocolate sale flopped," rather that "come up with." That being said, I believe that selling grades discriminates against poor students. I have been known to give a perfect attendance ticket and a perfect homework ticket each nine weeks, which can each be redeemed for 10 test points (not on the same test, if a student has both tickets). It's a nice incentive, but not enough to change an overall grade. However, purchasing such a thing seems kind of awful to me because poor students won't have equality of opportunity.

You would think a story in "The Apple" would be free from grammar errors! "Come up with"????
