30,000 Texas Teachers Not "Highlly Qualified"
Source: NBC
Tens of thousands of Texas teachers could be in jeopardy of losing their jobs if they aren't certified as "highly qualified." The Texas Education Agency said the U.S. Department of Education cited the state for not requiring new teachers, primarily at the elementary level, to be tested according to revised federal requirements.

If you were to move to Texas, your certification combined with your years of experience which resulted on a satisfactory rating should allow you to reciprocity. I think it is sad that Texas is not properly screening their teachers, and anyone who would like to make a hoopla about Texas doing something about it.... shame on you!!!

So, if I move to Texas after successfully teaching for 15 years, passing my states exams (MTEL) as well as Praxis II, I will have to take yet another exam? Will be judged " Highly Qualified" until a new standard is released? What educational credentials do the people creating this legislation have? When did they last teach in a classroom? At what point does it end. Teachers have to keep current with PDP's and minimum number of Grad credits earned annually, Teachers have graduated from accredited institutions, passed state licensing requirements, have earned or are in the process of earning advanced degrees and are still subject to the caprice of bureaucrats and elected officials who are not even required to have graduated high school? When will people wake up!
Can we say some truths here or is it politically incorrect to point out 1) many kids are not interested in school 2) Many kids that come to school, only come to sell drugs, start fights or get fed 3) School districts ( governed by elected officials with no educational requirements) set the policies, usually with no clue as to what teachers do, which makes the curriculum rigid at best and leaves no room for creativity that we hear so much about. 4) Education is not valued by many families, so it is no wonder their kids don't do well. 5) we offer entitlements to reward those who don't work hard, don't care or don't behave- and then we blame the teachers because they are not "Highly Qualified"
Will a teacher passing a test really change all that? Really? Will a Ph.D. from Harvard solve all our woes? I haven't seen it yet, but I have seen them make teaching harder and kids get less time on subject matter.
Oh, isn't Texas a state that uses pacing guides that spell out exactly what teachers need to be doing for every minute of every day? Why be qualified when all you need to do is be able to read the script?

I'm surprised that Texas would so lax or that the teachers don't want to do it. Here in AZ we have to do that plus become ELL qualified plus all of the other hoops we have to do.
