- About Me
- I'm a 66 year old English teacher living with my wife, & our 2 dogs & 1 cat in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I'm a Vietnam vet, USMC 1963-1967, Chu Lai, Vietnam, 1965-66. I have an MA in English Ed., & I've spent most of my teaching career abroad: 3/4 of a year in Shiraz, Iran (my timing was bad - I arrived in '78 just about 1/2 a year before the "Islamic Revolution." I didn't leave in time, so I got to see it happen & finally was able to leave 2 months later.) I lived & worked in Saudi Arabia for 19 years (not continuously - with breaks), 4 years in Jeddah, 15 in Riyadh, teaching English for the Institute of Public Administration. In between my stints there, I lived/worked in Jakarta, Indonesia (2 years) & taught all levels (elementary - college) in the States, in FL, CO, CA, KS, MO & NM. I taught Head Start ( 3 to 5 year olds) for 8 months, & I've taught ESL & Critical Reading at Santa Fe Community College. On March 24, 2008, though, I started a full-time job teaching GED at the New Mexico State Penitentiary. Update: recently laid-off due to mandatory 5% reduction of "non-essential" personnel; education, of course, is "non-essential."

John that's great - how it isn't like work for you. And I hear what you're saying about doing something meaningful.
LIMITED talents though? I don't believe that for a second reading your discourse on various subjects around The Apple.
I've encountered wonderful people here offering so much inspiration, and affirming my decision for this career choice. Thank you for being one of them!
PS I really enjoyed reading your comments in "Does Science Prove God".

Well, I figured it beat working for a living. Actually, that's true, since how can you call it work, getting paid for doing something you love to do?
I wanted to spend my life in a meaningful way, having some beneficial influence on others, leaving behind something worthwhile when I die. Given my (limited) talents, teaching seemed the best choice. I didn't even realize before I started just how much fun it would be as well. That was a very pleasant surprise.
