Personal
- About Me
- I live in St. Louis, MO and just completed K-12 teaching certification in art. I graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a BFA in painting; my current studio work is wheel thrown ceramic vessels and sculpture. I lived in Oakland, CA for six year and absolutely loved the bay area, but St. Louis is where I grew up and where I call home. I am still looking for a job teaching art (as are many of my classmates from the certification program I attended). Before being certified I taught Montessori, which is a philosophy of individual independence and respect for the community and one's surroundings that resonates strongly with me. I am also impressed with how the curriculum and school environment are set up: each activity allows the child independence, is highly organized, and breaks down most tasks into essential components. In addition, I am currently completing an MA in developmental psychology from San Francisco State University: my thesis involves the role of art education in fostering critical thinking processes in upper elementary students' reading comprehension. I don't believe that visual arts should be in the curriculum to bolster other subjects, however I think that visual art as a subject is integrative and fosters a type of holistic cognition that strengthens our minds.
