10 Ways to Make Extra Summer Income for Educators
Jill Hare | Editor, TheApple.com
Since the job market is tight, teachers may have trouble finding summer work- like waitressing or retail as in previous years. The one constant teachers have is connections with students- especially when they’re on summer break. Utilizing existing relationships over the summer has been a great way for teachers to earn extra money and help out parents who trust teachers with their children. Use your set of teaching and leadership skills in various ways to make money. As always, use your school policy handbook to make sure your actions follow proper protocol.

We have kids, so I doubt we'll use this. Bringing our kids to a stranger's home doesn't seem like such a good idea. Maybe if I was a college kid again, though, I'd consider doing it. This is probably the only kind of travel I could have afforded...

Good idea jfallon126... I plan on using my future master's degree I will earn next December to get a teaching position with a community college.

Watch that movie night one. Making ANY money off a film showing - even donations - has caught the ire of movie studios. We were asked by one to fork over $700 for a free end-of-the-quarter campus event. Then local sci-fi conventions had movie studio jerks drop in and look for "wrongdoing."

Just wanted to point out that tutoring and teaching may conflict with your district's policies and your contract. Many schools and districts will have ethical codes to follow, so you should check into these before tutoring or teaching your own school's or district's students. Also, there is a liability to worry about when it comes to having students at your house for movie night and/or babysitting. These are all great ideas but some logistics like acceptable and appropriate location and liability need to be considered.
Craft classes, technology/computer classes, or other skills you have would also be a great idea as classes to earn money

edufire.com is a great place to tutor, either one-on-one or hosting a class.

How funny. I agree with Melanie L on her comment. Why not post this before the semester ends for summer? At least you could have sent out letters offering tutoring over the summer home with your students.

Many community colleges only require an MA in an appropriate subject area for their professors. You can make a couple grand teaching just one class!

Why would you post this article half way through the summer. This would have been much more helpful in May, BEFORE we were on vacation.
