A Bachelor’s degree in secondary education provides graduates with the training necessary for initial teaching certification 9-12.

Those who want to apply to a bachelor’s program in secondary education should have graduated from high school or have obtained a GED. Each college or university has their own admission requirements, often including a personal essay and previous grades. Before deciding if a degree in secondary education is right for you, consider your ability and desire to work with this age group students. Any experience with this age group- either volunteer or career oriented- might be favorable for this degree.

A bachelor’s degree in secondary education prepares students to become teachers. Within this field, there are a variety of options, including public and private schools and many different subject. After achieving a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, students may elect to earn a higher degree, which could lead to a career in school administration or post-secondary education.

Students concentrating in secondary education choose a content area specialty and pursue a dual major in their content area and in education. Students can pursue a teaching certificate in secondary education in a variety of subjects, including mathematics, science, English, social studies, and foreign language. The secondary education degree is rigorous because it is a double major between education and the subject of focus.

Each secondary education degree concentration prepares future teachers with the skills required to engage students in learning.

Secondary teachers, also called high school educators, help students delve more deeply into subjects introduced in elementary and middle school. Additional responsibilities of secondary school teachers may include career guidance, job placement, coaching, and extra-curricular activities.
