15 Toughest Interview Questions (and Answers!)

7. What salary are you looking for?

Bad answer:
“In my last job I earned $35,000 – so, now I’m looking for $40,000”
Though most public schools have salary scales, private schools, learning centers, and other education companies don’t. If you can avoid it, don’t give an exact number. The first person to name a price in a salary negotiation loses. Instead, re-iterate your commitment to the job itself. If you have to, give a broad range based on research you’ve conducted on that particular role, in your particular city.
Good answer:
“I’m more interested in the role itself than the pay. That said, I’d expect to be paid the appropriate range for this role, based on my five years of experience. I also think a fair salary would bear in mind the high cost of living here in New York City.”

I favorited this article when it first came out. I am a first time teacher, though I have my Masters degree, and I reviewed these this morning before heading off to an interview. I am glad I archived the email that notified me of this entry. After submitting dozens of applications all over this summer with no results, I have received 3 interview calls this week. I had thought (at the time of graduation) that my scores, grades, Masters degree, and the fact that I have 10 years plus non-education work experience would have landed me some interviews sooner than this. This summer just proves that you never stop learning...I have definitely been educated in the difficulties of getting a teaching job this summer.

Excellent submission! Prior to this article someone would write down the questions they were asked in an interview and share them with the audience for consideration. Being forewarned is an advantage but it didn't help with composing answers. Having suggested directions to go with responses is a great help.
