I''m living in western PA,have been since 2004(Pittsburgh). This city trains alot of teachers but hires very few. I received my Masters in 2006and have teaching certification from the state of Vermont. I've done substitue teaching, tutoring and afterschool programs but I have yet to teach in the classroom at 51 pulling up roots seems so hard to do and then I have to selll a house. Of the six top cities fro high school teachers, which school systems are minority friendly(I'm an Afreican American female). Also what city(ies) have the best cost of living. These salaries are good but what about housing, cost of food and gas and access to public transportation. I love museums, theater, symphonies etc; Which city overall is best for all of these things. Finally I'm a single mom who is about to become an empty nester. Availiblity of men for dating? I know this sounds like alot but I need to know before making any moves.
Thanks,

It doesn't matter where you teach...we are underpaid! Based on the cost of living in these cities, I'm not impressed with the "high" pay.

I'd be curious to see the comparative cost of living in each of those cities. My guess is that $50,000 in NYC won't go as far as $40K elsewhere. Wherever it is, teachers are invariably underpaid.

You can't forget that these sports teams are endorsed by ads (i.e. Addidas); the education system is funded by the federal and state goverment.

Why is he/she being so cheap? I think it should be a $50,000 minimum pay. Now, most people will think, some cities won't be able to afford it or will have to raise taxes...I don't see how they can't afford. Last time I checked, most of the big cities have things call professional sports teams in which people make millions of dollars just to entertain others. Is it just me or is our society going backwards? Teachers, Police officers, fire fighters, nurses, EMT's Ect.. get underpaid for jobs that are the most important in our society.

In Macedonia teacher's salaries are the same in all cities and that is 3500 $ per year( its little above the average salary in the country).High school teachers get more about 4200$ -4500$(if the schools produce something or if they are in contact with some factories )the teachers get extra money or go to free excursions in our neighboring countries like Greece,Bulgaria,Serbia even in Hungary or Croatia.
It's not fair. People here envied teachers on our summers 'off'.

Tava, I think you misread the headline. It read that a presidential candidate wants a MINIMUM teacher salary of $40 nationwide. Wouldn't that be grand? An associate degreed friend of mine makes twice what I do, working as a procurement officer for a large company. Who ever said life was fair? I also want to stomp the toe of every person who makes a crack about us having summers "off."

Which presidential candidate wants to cap teachers salaries? That's ridciulous. Teachers should get more than executives do.
they work harder and aren't apreciated.

I totally agree with Jenny and Wendy that these cities are expensive to live in. Isn't it sad that it takes an expensive city for a teacher to make a higher starting salary above $40,000? There are so many great, qualified teachers out there worth just that much if not more in other areas!

The cost of living is much higher in these areas too! I don't think a teacher could afford to live in these cities without a 2nd income (from a spouse).

Ah, but do not forget the rising costs of living. There is no choice but to raise teacher salaries, especially in highly populous markets as these.
