I personally find it interesting that though we see parents who care less about their children than we the teachers do that we are not ALLOWED to have lives outside of school. Out of fear I have become essentially a hermit in these times as a public school teacher. I don't think it's right or fair that a teacher be judged OR fired because of what they post on their "private" facebook or myspace pages. So long as we're not allowing students as friends it shouldn't matter. Obviously it's not a good idea to completely BASH students, parents, or peers in writing ANYWHERE however, teachers ARE HUMAN for crying out loud! If we want to go out on a Friday night with a bunch of friends and have a few drinks then we should be allowed to without fear of a parent or someone else having a conipsion fit about a teacher being "unprofessional!" If the teacher puts in their time and then some (as most teachers do) during the day/week then when they're "off the clock" so to speak let them have their life! I personally think as long as we're not posting "privileged" information about students or bashing those mentioned above, as well as taking precautions to keep our pages private then it's absolutely NO BUSINESS of anyone to try to use those things against us when we've decided to dedicate our live to a career that we love, bust our butts for, work LONG HARD hours, and get paid little. Have some respect for those who are dedicating themselves to a life of public service. We're seeing teachers get FIRED for posting pics of them HOLDING a beer yet our politians can go have very public "RELATIONS" with questionable individuals with NO consequence other than publicity which actually HELPS them in their careers! Get real on what the standards are! Teachers are expected to have NO lives outside of school and when they do cut loose or vent a little or even go on VACATION they get fired. It's beyond amazing how far these double standards go.

I was not rehired at the end of the last school year, reason given: none. I was told that their lawyers advised them NOT to discuss it with me. I have applied for well over 70 jobs, but am 45 with a Masters degree and 10 years experience-NO ONE wants me. Once again it is a very clear case of degrade the teacher, don't support the teacher; but ask the teacher to support the students in any way shape or form. When are administrators going to realize they aren't there to cover their butts, they are there to help the community provide a good education for their students. These students NEED to see REAL people being human. They have turned to the TV, Internet, games, music videos and the like for their behavioral models. Students are starved to see human behavior in front of them; like so many of the comments, this behavior is what endears the students to the teachers and enhances the learning process.

Students are so much more exposed to violence and pornography than I would have ever thought possible. Everyday I am bombarded with thousands of inappropriate comments from my students and I have to remain professional. At our teacher inservice, we are faced with a new program - I must now teach 'academic english' in my science class. It is not that I disagree, but who will listen while they're sexting? I took two phones away from students that were showing animal porno with mp3. There is a gap between what the public perceives is true and what I observe on a daily basis in the classroom. I am told to put my students in group, so that they will talk; but then I'm told to put them rows, so that they will behave. There are no punishments for disruptive or disrespectful students. Then I read about a district that went broke because the board members used non-approved voter bonds to buy property that couldn't even be used to build a school on. They bought 80 acres of farmland and wetlands from their friends, the developers. And no punishment. If you're a teacher, than these are terrible times. Schools are beyond repair, so just don't stand out and pray for an early retirement if its still there when you leave. Our politicians and leaders should be ashamed of themselves - and our classrooms are a disgrace to the world.
