30 Students Quoted: What a Perfect School Should Be

MissCal.Q.L8 | TheApple

I did a writing across the curriculum exercise where students described what their perfect school would be like. Some of the students had really good insights and I thought I would share my student quotes with you.

Quote #1
“My perfect school would be a night time school.”

Next page: Quote #2

    leadteacher,
The student was not referring to pimp in that context but in the context of the MTV show "Pimp My Ride" where cars are customized and decorated to match the owner's personality. It is a good choice to use the word because we want to show how a student perceives school.

    Viola23,
I see what you mean but maybe students would get more educational use of out it if assignments were online. I could run my classroom paperless if all of my students had access to a computer of their own.

    tangeraldino,
The student was referring to how the dress code and other rules get stricter each year due to a select few students who cannot follow the rules. This quote was not referring to classroom punishment.

    neilkelvin,
They are funny and definitely unique to each student's personality. Thanks for the compliments.

    jenperry212,
It's always interesting to hear how students view things. These came from 8-12th grade students.

    havelina,
I think the student phrased that nicely in Quote #15: Teachers would be laid back, but still be in control. We can maintain boundaries and limits without being uptight. Firm, but not rude.

As a teacher who is trying to help my students what is appropriate and what isn't, I found myself especially disappointed in this quote. I realize that it is a student's quote, but it could have been altered by your staff. Please look up pimp in the dictionary. Is it really a good choice to use it in a professional e-newsletter?

Actually, in middle school, my eighth grade year we were given laptops to each student..it was pretty cool..we were the only school to do that, i think the district was trying to find out if we learned better by having the technology with us at all times. Personally, this would be great for the students because they can download music, make cds, play games, which isn't a good idea when you have to give it back at the end of the year, I enjoyed having one. Did I really use it for school work? NO, not really because we didn't get much stuff to work with the lap top. This might seem lake a good idea, and maybe it would be really helpful depending on how the kids and teachers incorporate it into their schoolwork, but mostly its the students who will get the most out of it by playing games and having music on it. c/o 2009

Democracy and justice are principles we should always uphold and to be humanely fair and square , punishment must be done properly. In school, the idea of one for all, all for one , is useful. But to apply it in the classroom for the purpose of punishing certain individual, that is rediculous.

Yes, reasonable, but the students have also got to meet us half way there. I fully support laid back, but who is going to keep the boundaries fresh and the limits intact?
