10 Things Your Students Won't Tell You
Jill Hare | Editor, TheApple.com
1. You Aren’t Their Favorite Teacher

Students will tell you that you are in fact their favorite teacher. They want to make good grades and stay off your bad list. But the truth is, student opinions change with the wind. Don’t put a lot of stock into what students think about you or how popular a teacher you seem to be. Wining a popularity contest is not what you got into teaching to do.
In my experience, the “favorite teacher” label usually went to the teacher who allowed their students to get away with anything and didn’t require a lot. Who’d want that label if that’s the case?!

I find this more entertaining than informational. Some things are correct some are not. I think some teachers need to use more empathy with their students, I cheated when I was in school, that's how I know when my students cheat. It's hard to con a con artist.
But most kids do tell you these things, if you have their trust and respect.

Yeah, this wasn't either a 1) very honest article or 2) a well researched article.

10 things about this article I hate. 1) It's made up. (2) It's not real. (3) It generalizes and generally lies to us. (4) It's unreal. (5) It is not the truth. (6) Who says? (7) It's not based on good research and fact. ( 8) It's has no base in reality. (9) Ya right. (10) It's so off the mark I can't believe it.

This was mildly entertaining. However, I didn't find this informative. These are NOT the 10 things students will not tell you. My experience has been, if you are paying attention your students will tell you all of these things and some that you wished they didn't. You can tell within the first month of school the parents who care or not. Gaining students trust is what matters the most. Then getting to really know WHO they are. When those things happen, really there isn't much they won't tell you.

As a teacher your class should be intereting, were students are not grabbing ,it is the responsibility of the teacher to catch their attention.

I knew my students were "alternative", but apparently they're a lot more honest than the norm!

Although, I don't agree with all of these (especially #1 & 5 since I've had students who loved me but still hated school, and I personally believe the students who really mean it when they tell you that you're their favorite are the ones who tell it to you in retrospect) it does bring up the point that we need to constantly be checking in on them and know our students thoroughly
We can't make a difference just by knowing the material. We need to connect the students to the material so that they can learn to value learning and knowledge.
The other problem I have with this is that a lot of these seem to address schools from the suburbs and doesn't address the problems or concerns teachers have to face when in the urban districts.

Kids tell me all the time that they hate school and that I'm not their favorite teacher. They have no problem doing that. I had a kid tell me just last week that he didn't mind going to the principal. Also, I've never had a student afraid to tell me their parents don't care... parents have even said it. I don't know where it is that students are afraid to tell their teachers the truth, especially if it hurts!
