9 Reasons to Quit Teaching and 10 Reasons to Stay

9 Reasons to Quit Teaching and 10 Reasons to Stay

Face it, you are not as good of a teacher as you could be. You’re not living up to your potential. Nobody is. There are many reasons to quit, here are 9:

1. Bad students
2. Bad administrators
3. Bad curriculum
4. Too much paperwork
5. Too much negativity
6. Too much responsibility
7. Not enough time
8. Not enough credit
9. Not enough PAY

Where am I?

Seth Godin says that you are in The Dip. What’s The Dip?. This is that place where it feels like nothing you do matters. Things were going so well until you hit The Dip. It’s when you get to that point where you realize that indeed, the honeymoon is over. When the tide has turned and things are not as easy as they once were? The Dip is where both champions and quitters are proven. The picture shows you where The Dip is.

Chart1_max200w

I wrote about The Dip previously, but never really sat down and applied it to education directly. I was thinking about this today and realized that it would be a great thing to address.

So just how does The Dip apply to teaching?

Many teachers spend their entire career in The Dip. They say that most teachers quit before their sixth year of teaching. Those who quit felt that they were either in a Cliff or a Cul-de-sac, as demonstrated in this picture. I would suggest that most people who begin teaching are in The Dip. The question you must ask yourself is, Am I ready to get through this thing? If you are, then there’s some good news!

Teaching can be just as rewarding as it is frustrating. Getting your teaching degree doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be a good teacher. Whether you get your degree at a traditional university or online college, you still need to possess the intrinsic values of a teacher. But, in the end you’ll know the reason you got a teaching degree and not, say, a nursing degree.

You can get through it. It simply takes hard work, great classroom management skills, and a desire to be the best teacher in the world. Look around this site for some ideas of how to push through to success. I suggest going to My Top 10 List, or my Questions That Will Save Your Career series.

So why should we stick with this education thing anyway?

Elow. I am an Engineering Graduate who landed in the teaching profession. This is my 20th yr now in the school where i am currently connected and like most teachers, at times i also felt i was in the dip. But it's true - teaching could be as interesting as it is frustrating. Despite receiving a very thin envelope, i think I was able to get through it. Why? Because i believe the reasons to STAY always outnumber the reasons to QUIT. And take it from me, despite the odds, i remain happy and content... My secret? I strongly believe and agree with the 10 reasons stated above.

I have decided to leave my current teaching postion because of reasons 2, 3, 5, and 8. The new administration has become toxic and collaboration is now non-existant.

I strongly agree with Reason 3 to quit. What do you do in a situation that you have to teach in a
" Bad curriculum" that you dont completely agree on what they want you to get across with the students? (if this question made since to you...... I give you kudos)

I was chosen tobe hired as a full time sub.teacher in MI, I was there best. I could handle some class rooms better than the full fledged teacher. The problem is I cannot pass the test for teaching, but do have enough for subbing. I believe it is pretty sad that a test will tell you if you are good ,when once your in the classroom some don' even know where to begin.

If you're "born to teach", some of the nine reasons on the first page might cause you to switch locations, but they would never deter you from teaching.
Why? Well, because the first seven reasons listed in the second page are so much a part of your personality that you would find no other job fulfilling/

When I was a student teacher visiting schools for my teaching practice, I felt uncertain if I would be able to cope with the behavioural problems. I planned to work in a primary school, but ended up teaching grade 10 - 12 in a school with lots of at risk students. I was surprised at my own inner strength and ability. Teaching is a tough job, but there is nothing else that I can imagine ever doing!

I am a first year teacher and I can honestly say that I enjoy teaching! Yes it has its downside, however, the good out weighs the bad. My students are my heart, especially since my school is a majority white. I feel like not only do I give my black students a positive role model, but I also give my white students a chance to interact with a black man and give them a positive image. As far as the pay goes, its not bad in my county. Besides, how much money would you make in any job during your first year with a Bachelor's? The money is to be made. You just have to get out and make it. develop programs, tutor, supervise extracurricular activities, or simply go get your Master's and teach @ a jr. college. Don't complain. You have job security, you are contracted, you work 9 months and get paid 12, you get more holidays than most if not all working people, and you also get random time off. Not too mention its not much of a hassle to take off when needed. Teaching is awesome! But, you can't do it UNLESS you have passion. excuse spelling and or grammatical errors, I did this from my cell :)

Teaching for me is a vocation, it's my calling. I guess my greatest influence is my family. I came from a family of teachers. I grew up living with my 2 grandmas who were both principals at that time and my grandpa who was a teacher. My aunt who took care of me is also a teacher and still teaching. I must admit that being an educator is a tough job. I stopped teaching not because I'm tired of being a teacher but because we had a change of residence and since then I haven't found a teaching job yet. It is really hard to get a job here that is why I'm trying my luck abroad or in foreign countries. I really miss teaching kids! I like being an educator because it gives me a sense of fulfillment and I enjoy doing activities with my students. For those who are still planning to become teachers, my advise is, think it over. If you think you're ready for a tough job then go for it! Because once you are already a teacher you have a commitment with your students, administrators, parents and to God. Break a leg!

I am an aspiring teacher, a sped teacher at that! WOW, the article made me sigh!!! If should go on or not.. but of course definitely,, I WILL... This will serve as my inspiration as this coming Feb 16, will mark a new chapter of my life, to the world of Special Education. My mom serves also as my inspiration. She has served the teaching profession for 37 years. Thus, I am proud to be a daughter of an educator. Definitely, i wouldn't mind the reasons to quit, because there are enough reasons to stay...you listed 10..i guess there's more...Can I have this posted on my multiply site..so i can share this to other teachers as well????Thanks a lot for this great article.

I am one of those teachers that will stick with it to the bitter end. Teaching is a part of me and a calling I have had since I was 6 years old. I have been teaching for 13 years and am recently between jobs. I am currently tutoring students for teachers and assisting them with those students in reading, math, and language. I watch these teachers "teach" and wonder why they are still there and why they decided to teach to begin with. I can only watch even when they are making a mistake. This has been a humbling experience for a teacher with my background. I will find a new teaching position and again be where I belong; but until then, I watch. I will not give up. I feel lost not being in the classroom full time. I told my husband that my mind is going numb. I am so use to always thinking of new ways to teach and how to reach a student , even in my sleep. Now I do not have that to think about and I am lost and sad. I sit with students that really need help but an unable to make a difference because I am sent six to eight students out in the hall and it is ofcourse the students that the teacher just wants out of her room. Instead of helping, I am policing behavior. I hope to find a way to help the few I have been able to identify as really needing help before this year ends. I know I am where I am because one of those students really needs me and I am determined to be there for that student. I have however been given the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of teaching teacher at the university level. I always said I would teach 6 year olds all day and teachers at night. That is the one good point to being jobless this year, I was able to pursue an adjunct position at the university. I am hoping to inspire those who are being called and discourage those that are in it for all the wrong reasons. Thanks for listening.

I am working on obtaining a teaching degree at the moment and I am willing taking a $15,000 a year pay cut to switch careers. The intrinsic value of teaching far surpasses any payscale they can make. I can't stand the thought of wasting my life away in a cubicle having never actually done anything to make a difference.
