Hi! I am an Asian who married an American, living here in New Jersey. I just got here last April of this year. I have worked in the Philippines as a Psychology Professor for seven years and I was thinking if what job can I land into now that I am in the states. Are there any requirements before I can teach in university or college in New Jersey? Is there a need for my Transcript of Records to be evaluated? If yes, where should I bring it? I am at lost. I have no idea where to go and what to do. I love teaching and if I will be given a chance to teach, it would be great. I have finished my Masters Degree in Psychology too. I don't mind teaching in gradeschool either. Can anyone please enlighten me with these. Thanks in advance.

I reside in Richmond, VA and really would like to become a teacher in the area. I have a very strong professional background, but have never taught before. I'd like to know the best path to take towards this career decision. I'm already in the process of pursuing my Masters in Education. I know there is a need for good teachers in my area, particularly in the city schools, but I could really use some advice on how to break into the field and get started.

Hey macdonc353, here's couple thoughts-and they're not intended to make me sound like I know it all; I don't, but there's a red flag in your statement that you might want to consider. You said "It's not the material or the teaching style because I teach the same class to other students and they are very active in class." One of the things that I've found to be very useful over the years is a recognition of the fact that there are no two classes that can be taught the same way. I have to change my own behavior to meet the needs of the particular composition of students that's in front of me at any given moment. If one group of students responds well to the material and teaching style that you use, that's great! Be proud of that. And also recognize that the next group of students may not respond at all to the very same approach. You mentioned that this is a special ed class. Remember, the nature of developmental (and other) disability includes the fact that your students will exhibit varying capabilities and interests from one day to the next. So what do you have left? One thing, and one thing only. Take a week and focus less on the curriculum at hand, and engage in other activities that are intended to develop a positive relationship with the students in that particular class. I'm not saying to get all buddy-buddy with them. Just do whatever you need to convince them that you actually care about their progress-but do it in a way that's meaningful to them. Then reintroduce the curriculum-likely to more enthusiastic kids! Good luck.

I am a new teacher and I have a special ed English class first thing in the morning. The students refuse to participate in class no matter what I ask for a question. Even taking attendance is a struggle because they just don't want to speak, yet they are quite capable of talking. I have told them participation is a part of their grade but they don't care. How do I get them more involved in class? It's not the material or the teaching style because I teach the same class to other students and they are very active in class.

I am currently studying for the CSET Subject Tests and Writing, but even though I probably want to just specialize in Computer and Arts, and maybe math classes, I feel that the California testing situation (prior to the actual course study of getting a credential) is somewhat lengthy. The CSET Subject Tests range from English, Child Development, to Physical Education, Calculus II, Biology, Chemistry, Drama and Life Sciences, and the History of the World, California, and American History. Each of the subject tests (of 3) are in a 6.5 hour period and the tests are expensive $110 each, and the writing $70.00. Besides the lengthy testing is the fact that I may really not be that interested in teaching in California as I've lived in South Carolina and New Orleans prior, and feel that getting a credential here would just be California specified. In other words, should I make a decision where I want to teach first before getting my credential? And also which state has a more specific testing approach to get to the type of credential th

I am currently looking to enroll in a teaching ESL education program, and I am seriously thinking about how good my options for work will be as soon as I graduate. I live in Florida but my husband is in the military so we are constantly moving out. Do you know how high is the demand for ESL teachers in USA and particularly in Florida? Any suggestions about things to do in order to get a job in this area once you graduate?

This is my second year teaching, this year I am teaching 2nd grade. Last year I taught Kindergarten. I am nervous about my grade this year for a few reasons. First, I am in a new school with a different curriculum approach and second, I feel that my comfort level is with pre-k and k age groups. As a first year teacher I struggled with classroom management. Some days it was on and, it feels like, most days it wasn't. I came home many days frustrated and discouraged. I do not want this year to be the same. Do you have any suggestions on classroom management for 2nd graders. Thanks!
